Are “NOW” and “THEN” opposite?

by Susan Liddy

I’m all comfy on my sofa right now. My little dog, Rudy, is nestled between my boyfriend, Matt, and me. Yesterday we took down our Christmas Tree and packed away our holiday decor. I’ve been thinking a lot about this upcoming year and what I can expect. Then I caught myself… expect… expecting… wondering.

I think that the space of wonder and curiosity is a good one, yet these past few days, for me, have put me in the realm of what I call “Future Focus”. I’ve found myself so focused on tomorrow, next month and next year even, that I lost touch with NOW… TODAY… THIS MOMENT.

Are “now” and “then” so opposite? Can we really have a vision for the future yet stay grounded in TODAY? I believe, “yes”. I simply need to remind myself how important each moment is; allow myself to fully experience each moment. Essentially, “tomorrow” is created from the moments of today. As I cultivate each current moment I am also cultivating my future. Such a paradigm shift of the past few days where I was in the space of attempting to cultivate “today” by making something happen “tomorrow”!

So, in this moment, as my little dog and boyfriend are curled up next to me, I will fully breath into the feelings that are present. I feel content, peaceful, and loved. I feel a sense of family and belonging. All my needs are met. I am complete.

How do you re-focus yourself on NOW while creating your future?

You work your inner zone daily maintaining balance through an awareness of your groundedness, of your 3 primary energy centres, breathing into each of them -your stomach, heart and head – while reminding yourself you are present, open and awake to the possibilities of change as you maintain an outer awareness through observing yourself in the 3rd person.

As a start anyway
