Coaching Tip: Let your Legs do the Walking at Work

Many women who work in an office environment don’t tend to move around much during the day. We are tied to our desk or office, glued to the computer, or on the telephone. This sedentary work style isn’t good for your health or for building strong relationships at work.

Here are some quick tips to get you on your feet:

1.) Instead of using interoffice mail to send paperwork to a co-worker, leave your desk and walk it over.

2.) Use eMail as it empowers you, yet for the short/quick communications, walk over to the recipients office and tell them in person what you’d like to say.

3.) Invite co-workers to eat lunch with you in the company break room or cafeteria. Make is a No-Work zone and only engage in fun conversation about your lives.

4.) Take advantage of your company’s employee satisfaction programs such as the in-office gym or bag lunch workshops. This will not only get you out of your office or cubicle, it will get you connected with your other co-workers.

5.) Have a walking meeting – people actually think better on their feet so for your next weekly staff meeting, why not doing while walking?!

6.) Lastly, when it comes to the “around-the-cooler” chats with co-workers be wary. This is typically the place for gossip, office politics and complaining. Instead, invite the co-workers who you resonate with to a quick cup of coffee where you can sit down together for short breaks to chat about what is meaningful and uplifting.

Great tips Susan, love the simplicity of the 6 tips, yet when we are set in a routine we often even forget the simple shifts we can make that can have a huge impact on our overall well being. Appreciate your powerful insight.

Good tips Susan. I really like the e-mail one. My hubby laughs everytime he gets and email from the guy next to him, however sometimes he sends email just so he has a paper trail. They have elevators in his building, but he always uses the stairs. You, might want to add that one to the list.

When it comes to my house the stairs are one thing I really like about it.

Susan, thanks for sharing these tips with us.

It’s a great reminder to get moving, even if it’s just several short walks woven throughout your day.

I really try, when I can, to walk on any breaks I have during the day. It may be a walk around the corner, a walk to the bank, to get some lunch or to grab some afternoon tea.

This helps me so much to clear my head and help re-energize me.

As always, you inspire…

These are great tips and it also helps build relationships. A few of my co-workers and I get together daily for prayer and meet one day a month before work for a prayer breakfast. This allows me to connect with other women to see their needs and how I may be of better service. I also have those times where there is a just a loud outburst of laughter because my co-worker has sent me a funny email to make us all smile. Thanks for sharing your tips
