Coaching Tip to Get Present

The present moment is where life occurs. Nothing outside this moment exists, not the past nor the future.
Yet, EXPERIENCING the present moment can be a challenge for many. Here’s a coaching activity to help you to get present. Practice stepping into the present moment by doing just that. S-T-E-P-P-I-N-G.
  1. Right now, stand up.
  2. Put your feet a hip widths apart.
  3. Activate the muscles in your buttocks and thighs, your core abdomen and roll your shoulders back into a straight yet relaxed position.
  4. Feel your breath.Allow your chin to fall naturally with your eyes in a forward and relaxed gaze.
Now take a step forward… S-L-O-W-L-Y while maintaining your body position. Feel the earth beneath the heal of your foot, now through the sole of your foot and to the ball of your foot.
Take another step, with the same process. All while breathing, shoulders back and relaxed, core muscles activated to support you.Walk across the room allowing yourself to take five times as long as you normally would. Notice each moment with each step.
By the time you reach the other side, notice how relaxed and centered you feel. And, it may have seemed like a long time. Slowing down to step into the present moment actually “creates more time”! Do you see the irony?
How do you get present? Or, how did this exercise work for you?

I find I am the most happy when I am the most present. What are some ways that you get focused on Here and Now?

  • I just tried this and felt VERY peaceful while blues music was playing in the background on the satellite radio. I became oblivious to the music though and concentrated on what I was physically doing and got a little giddy even just hanging there.

Normally when I try to get present, I have to have complete quiet. I see that this isn’t really necessary…my intention can take me there with music/noise/distractions regardless. :D

  • Being in the now is something I struggle with, as a natural planner I’m always finding myself thinking about the future. One thing I have noticed that helps is being in nature, watching the way the wind rustles through the leaves on the trees, feeling the breeze caress your skin, the sun on your back, watching and listening to the birds, noticing the beauty and delicacy of a flower. Taking a moment to be in awe and gratitude of creation and the joy that everyday things can bring.

I love that you all commented on this post!

I think I’ll take a present moment break right now… In the form of what I call “be here now belly breathing.”

Want me to tell you how?

    Hi everybody,

What I normally do when I am busy and need a moment of present is what I think you (Susan) call belly breathing.
Take a deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth with a little pause in the middle to feel all that air in my belly and lungs. If I repeat this a couple of times I get present no matter where I am.

  • yeah, those “be here now belly breaths” are magical.
thank you for the reminder to take one now.

    beeeee —- hheeerreee—— Noooooooowwwwwwwww
