Coaching Tip to See Life’s Bigger Picture

by Susan Liddy

Stuck in Black and White?

  • Do you experience life in extremes of things being either one way or another; bad or good, weak or strong, wrong or right?
  • If one thing goes wrong does it ruin everything?
  • If you feel that if you’re not perfect than you are a complete failure?
  • How often do you use words like: always, never or impossible?

This is often referred to as “Black and White Thinking” and cultivating the skill of thinking in color is a great way to embrace the flexibility of life. Truth is, life moments are rarely only one way or the other. Things can be both bad AND good, experiences can be both frustrating AND supportive, and people can be both vulnerable AND strong. You can feel feelings of sadness AND know life is good.

Today, try to find the “color” in situations. Allow yourself to feel ALL of the feelings and consider the many perspectives and possibilities related to your experiences. Practicing this type of thinking and feeling will enable you to tap into the bigger picture of life and experience life from a fuller and richer place.

In what life areas can you think more in color?

Hi Susan,
I like that idea of thinking in color. Never thought of it that way before. I can always find the positive in any situation, now I get to look at it in color.
Thanks, you just empowered me again.

Things are usually black/white, sometimes I hope for gray (middle), but now I need to venture into technicolor.
