Living a balanced life is important to more than just your overall health and satisfaction. It is one of the best things you can achieve if you want to expand your career horizons.

Are you considering a major career change? Good for you! It is never too late to find out what type of career you would really thrive at, and start doing just that. Just know that you’ve got some up-front work ahead of you before you can even think about a new job or career!

  • Preliminary Step 1: Determine your next career
  • Preliminary Step 2: Minimize the financial risk
  • Preliminary Step 3: Make the transition as easily as possible

And whatever you do, don’t forget the one vital step that is so often overlooked. You also want to set up your lifestyle to accommodate the coming changes!

A career change can heavily impact your self esteem, due to the added stress it brings. As you make the transition, you’ll need to maintain your energy levels, learn how to best manage your time, and get a handle on your shifting priorities.

Below is a step by step plan to getting your life in balance so you can define and IMPLEMENT your new career…

1. Find a place of joy in your current job or career. Use this a launching point for the next one. It’s best to leave your job from a place of satisfaction. Be aware of the many blessings and abundance that your current position and responsibilities bring you. Take stock of all your skills and talents. Be mindful of what you’ve learned, as well as those who have helped you along the way.

2. Create a structure within your life. Learn to balance your professional life with your personal life, as well as household tasks and healthy self care. Maintain quality output in your current job as you create the next career… whether it’s self employment, a new position with new responsibilities, or an entirely new endeavor in a brand new field. This is about establishing routines and rituals, organizing your space, clearing out your clutter and consolidating.

3. Establish a good self care routine. Eat healthy foods. Get enough rest. Drink plenty of water and keep up with an exercise routine. This will create the energy you need to stay on top of your personal life as you manage your current career while working on the next one. Also don’t forget the little things… like keeping doctor appointments, and taking a good multivitamin!

4. Engage in activities you enjoy. It’s easy to get stuck in Tunnel Vision when creating a new career, i.e. “I’d better go home and scan the job boards every day.” But the truth is that you’ll keep your vitality up by honoring your fun and adventurous side. Engage in hobbies that you love! Take short day trips to local areas. Read about topics that interest you.

5. Gather the troops… create a support team. Identify the people in your life who will support new career aspirations. Identify the naysayers who will not be your “go to people” during this time of change. For example, if your parents express doubt and fear when you mention leaving your job, then avoid talking to them about this until you’re well established in your new venture. Instead, call upon your open-minded friends if you need to vent, brainstorm or get advice.

If you are exploring a new career… remember to have fun! This is an exciting project and one that is well worth the effort. You spend nearly 8 hours doing work every day for at least 50 weeks per year. If you’re launching your own business… that figure may be much higher! Why not spend those hours doing what you love – bringing meaning into the world in your own unique way!
